One of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world had many different functions before it was turned into the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. In the 18th century it was bought by the British consul and turned into an estate. After that, it became a mansion, a hotel and eventually to what it is now: a tropical garden with beautiful flora & fauna, art and an amazing view of the bay of Funchal.
We went up in the Monte cable car, which gave us a panoramic view of the capital city Funchal.
Through the Monte Palace museum and the oriental gardens the history of Portugal and the adventures of the Portuguese in Japan can be explored.
After visiting the beautiful botanical gardens we went down in a basket car. The traditional toboggans are dragged by two men. The speed of the car is controlled by the men through ropes.
